No Fatalities in massive 70 car Pileup in Mass., ICY Highway
There was an immense 70 motor vehicle Pileup on Interstate 290 near Worcester, Massachusetts (MA). This massive Mass. car crash was caused by Icy roads that were extremely slick. Amazingly, there were no fatalities as a result of the crash. There were a couple of serious injuries in this multi-car wreck.
Numerous truck (Big Rig / Tractor Trailers) were also involved in the pileup. Approximately 35 people suffered injuries in these crashes. Dozens of people were transported to local hospitals. Police closed portions of the highway for a period of over 4 hours to tow vehicles from the scene of the collisions.

USA Today reported: Michael Verseckes, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation, said crews treated roads Sunday morning but the road conditions deteriorated quickly. USA Today December 1, 2013
MassLive reported: The people in the cars under the tractor-trailers, by right, they should have been killed, Marsh, who is a member of the department s collision reconstruction section, said Sunday afternoon. The cars’ roofs were caved into the steering wheels, the fire department had to cut roofs and doors off. Miraculously these people survived.
MassLive reported: Shortly before 7 a.m. Sunday, the temperature in Central Massachusetts dropped, turning precipitation into a freezing rain that created black ice on the elevated section of the highway.
In total, 65 vehicles, including two tractor-trailer trucks and two box trucks, were involved in the accident. About 60 non-injured people were evacuated from the highway by Worcester Regional Transit Authority buses, taken to the atrium at St. Vincent Hospital for warmth and food, to make alternative transportation arrangements and to talk with police id.
